I tried to tax my vehicle, but the MOT had run out!
Don’t panic – we are told this story every day! Unlike road tax, the DVSA do not send reminders notifying the expiry of your MOT and it remains your responsibility to maintain a valid MOT. You should bear in mind that the expiry date may not always be aligned with your tax disc. MOTPLUS offer a FREE reminder service so that you never forget again; just ask us at the time of test.
Can I have the MOT done early?
You may have the MOT test completed up to one month before it expires and recieve automatic credit for any unexpired days. This will ensure that the expiry date remains the same for the following year.
Why does the MOT certificate now look so basic?
In 2012 VOSA introduced the “plain paper” style VT20 MOT certificate. It serves only as a receipt that the MOT details have been recorded on the government’s computerised database and should not be taken as an absolute guarantee that the vehicle has a valid MOT. An MOT certificate may be verified by visiting the GOV.UK site.
I have lost my MOT, how do I get a replacement?
As the MOT system is now completely computerised, the paper MOT certificate is not as an important document as it once was. It does not need to be presented to obtain vehicle tax or insurance as the details can be checked online at any time. Should you wish to obtain a replacement however, we can print one for you. It does not matter where the last test was completed as any MOT station can issue duplicate MOT documents (pass or fail details). You will need to bring the vehicle registration document with you and there is a fee of £10 to pay.
Can I change the MOT expiry date?
We are sometimes asked if it is possible to change the MOT expiry date to align it with the tax disc expiry date. An MOT test can be completed at any time, and will be valid for one year. However, if you have the test completed any earlier than one month before it expiries, you will loose time from the existing certificate. For this reason, it is not usually done.
